Recap: Your Guide to Rank Top on Seach Engine

We have mentioned about a few techniques to get your website to rank high on the search engine.

Let's do a revision here, you can use this as a checklist:

1. Content
Content is one important factor not to overlook. You must have a good content and valueble information on your website to encourage returning visit. Acquire new visitor can take lots of effort. Visitor retention can also bring you high traffic. A satisfied visitor will bookmark your site and inform his/her friends about your site. All these does not take you effort to find new visitor. What you need to do is to have a satisfied visitor.

2. Link Popularity
You must have lots of inbound link to your site. Ask your friends for help if you have friends own a high PR site. Even if they don't, still ask them for help to include a link onto their websites. You can also submit your website link to the directory. Post auctions on eBay with your URL inside. This are high PR sites and they can bring you high traffic.

3. Optimize Your Page
Look for good keywords, and include keywords and short descriptions in your Meta-Tag. Include your keywords in your title and major headings. Also bold, italic your keywords as this increase the weighting of your words. Not to also forget about your image, include keywords into your Alt text of your images. All these help to improve the weighting of your keywords in your page. Lastly, start your 1st 3 sentenses and 1st 3 paragraph with keywords inside.

There are some cautions: Do not over stuff keywords to cheat the search engine. You will be penalized for doing so.

4. Submit You Page
Lastly, remember to submit your page to major search engines once a month.

Answer: You can use Google toolbar to check the PR of your site. In order to see the Google Page Rank, you'll need to download and install the Google Toolbar for free from:http://toolbar.google.com

Not only you can see the PR of your site, you can the PR of other site as well. That will allows to you joint venture or partner with high PR sites too.

You can also use this tools to check the PR of your competitor site and help to position your strategy to beat them.

Linking Website Tool

Linking Website is the specific website linking to www.yoursite.com/page1.htm for example. In order to find all of the websites that link to www.yoursite.com/page1.htm you can do a couple of things. Google has this amazing tool on their search engine to help you with this. Go to Google and enter this search command: link:www.yoursite.com/page1.htm.
Once you do this Google will return a large list of websites that link to www.yoursite.com/page1.htm.

Link Popularity

Link Popularity is just the number of links that are pointing to each of the webpages pointing to practicalweightloss.com. You can use the Google tool as mentioned about to count the total number links to your website

you could go to a website like http://www.linkpopularity.com/ to find each link partners link popularity much quicker. This gives your a summarise version from major search engine.

Lesson 9: What is Page Rank (PR)?

We have mentioned about link popularity is important to score high on search engine ranking. However, how do you know whether you have good link popularity or not.

Let's talk a bit about link popularity here. You can high link popularity if you have many people linking to your site. Low link popularity means very few people linking to your site. That's the basic idea.

Does that mean you have thousands of people linking to you will quarantee you a top search engine ranking?

The answer was YES but that was in the past. Many people submitted to FFA sites hoping to create thousands of links to their site and therefore hoping to score high on SE ranking.

In order to reduce abuse of this method and stress more on content relevancy, Google has come out with a new measurement called Page Rank.

What is Pagerank? - Pagerank is based on how many links to one website. PageRank is a value that represents how important a page is on the web. Robots or Spiders figures that when one page links to another page, it is casting a vote for the other page. Also the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote is. It matters because it is one of the most important factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results but It isn't the only factor that Search engines uses to rank pages. Not all links are counted by Search engines. .Some links can cause a site to be penalized by Search engines.

Internal linking - Internal linking also plays a factor in the Page Rank of the pages within a site. The linking structure within the site should follow the themed approach to internal linking, which stresses importance on minimizing linking between 2nd and 3rd level directories and pages. Example - The homepage has a PageRank of 5. You link your homepage that has a PageRank of 5, to other web pages on your site, which will in turn have a PR of 3 or 4. Now, you link all of the secondary pages that have a PR of 4 to the tertiary pages that will in turn have a PR of 3.

External Linking - External linking is the biggest factor in determining a web sites PageRank. Increasing your PageRank is very difficult, but important. The actual amount of effect that Search engines PageRank has on the ranking of a website or web pages is debated, but what we do know is that a web page's PR does play a big role in Google's indexing and Google's ranking. The higher a web page's PageRank, the more frequently it will be crawled and refreshed. While in most cases, a higher PR will accompany a higher-ranking site; it is not always the case. PageRank is a pretty complex mathematical calculation, but can be broken down into a simple version. PageRank is Google's scoring of Page 1. This scoring is based on the links that point to Page 1, and certain variables within the pages that the links come from. 1 link from Page 2 is held as a vote for Page 1, and if Page 2 has a high PageRank, this will is taken into account and will have a positive effect when calculating the Page Rank of Page 1. If Page 2, 3, and 4, all link to Page 1, but Page 2, 3, and 4 all have a PageRank of 3, then this will be taken into account when calculating the web page's PageRank. In the second situation, the pages with low PageRank's that link to Page 1 will not affect Page 1's PageRank in a negative effect, but also will not affect it in a positive way.

How do you know what is the PR of your website?

Download a google toolbar and you can view your PR on the toolbar. You must install this Google toolbar if you are serious about ranking high on search engine.

Lesson 5: Content Optimization

Meta Tag optimization is important to rank high on search engine. However, we cannot ignore the importance of content optimization as well.

I will show you some of the key content optimization technique step by step. You won't miss anything ;-)

Step 1: Include Keywords inside Header
Create a few headers in your page and include keywords into the header. Start your page with H1 header and you can make use of some other H2 - H6 sub headers.

Step 2: Include keywords in your contents
When writing your content, try to sprinkle your main keywords thoughout the page. However, don't over do it. Search engine will penalize you if they think you are stuffing too many keywords to cheat the system.

A rule of thumb is include one keyword in every 1 -2 paragraphs. Insert the keywords into your content as natural as possible for easy reading.

Hint & Tip: Make sure to mention your main keyword at the very top left and the very bottom right hand side of the webpage. No many people knows about this secret. A trick you can use is to include this in the copyright information line at the bottom of the website. For our example, this would be a good example:
© 2005 copyright www.domain.com search engine optimization

Step 3: Bold, Italic or Underline your keywords
Bold, italic or underline your keywords can increase the weighting of the words. Search engine robot will treat those bold, italic or underline words as important keywords.

Step 4: Include Alt to your image tag
This is another tip to optimize your contents. Insert 1 or 2 keywords in each Alt tag of your image. Again, this tell the search engine your image is related to your keywords.

You are done with content optimization. Do proof reading of your page, make sure you have enough keywords inside your page.

Lesson 4: Meta Tag Optimization

Once you have you keywords ready... here's the secret to share with you about writing your webpages.

First thing that you need to do is to Add a Title within the header section.

Include only main keywords and make it as short and concise as possible. That allows Google to give more weights to the keywords and increase chances of high ranking.

Hint:
Avoid non keywords related title like "Welcome to my homepage!" "Welcome to my online store"
Avoid lengthy title like "We teach you all the hints and tips how to make search engine optimization simple and easy."
Avoid too many adjectives.

A good title is "Search Engine Optimization SEO Examples & Hints"

Next thing you need to do is to Add a Meta Tag Description within header section.
Change the wordings in italic into 2 to 3 sentenses describing your webpages. It is important to include your keywords into this description. Limit to about 200 characters.

Last step you need to do is to Add a Meta Tag Keyword within header section.
Change the keywords in italic to your keywords. Avoid too many repeated keywords because search engine robot will penalize you. Limit to about 100 characters.

You are done with Meta Tag Optimization. This is a critical step to do before optimizing your page contents.

Here's the next step to do before starting constructing your webpages.

You have known how to look for the profitable keywords and phrases. In business, knowing your potential market is not enough. You need to know how much competition you will be facing in this business.

Of course, ideally, you would like to have as little competition as possible. That's why you need to find a niche.

Next question is how to know my competitor? Well, remember how we found out profitable keywords, we will make use of search engine again.

Here's the 1-2-3 steps:

1. Go to Google website.

2. Type your keywords or phrases into Google search box and click "Search".

3. You can see the number of competiting websites at the lower right hand color, the number is 74,000,000 websites competing for the keywords "search engine optimization".

Now, writing down the number of competing websites next each keywords.

Look through the list, you have both the search count & number of competing websites for each keywords.

Your task now is to look for the keywords or phrases with highest search count AND lowest competing websites. Because that means highest demand and lowest competition, that's what you want.

Select the top 5 keywords that meet the criteria above as keyword phrases for your website

Congratulation. You are done with market analysis.

Do you have the 50 keywords or phrases ready? This is most importance foundational step, otherwise, "Optimize The Wrong Keywords And You'll Likely Never See Results ..."

Now, you have 50 keywords, next question to ask is: "How do I know which keywords is the most profitable?".

I am going to teach you how to know what topic or phrases is the most profitable one. I assumed you want to learn SEO because you want to make money online. To create sales online, you need to have lots and tons of traffic to your sites. That's the reason why you want to have a search engine optimized page to bring in lots of visitors.

To bring in the visitor, you need to know what is the appetite of your visitors. Right!

Having said this, you need to know what are the demand of your visitors, what are they looking for on the search engine? How many times are they searching for such words or phrases on the search engine?

This helps you to determine your market potential. If there are some phrases noone is looking is looking for. It is worthless to optimize those keywords because they have no value at all.

There is one free "Keyword Selection Tool" that you can use to help you, that is:

Type in the 50 keywords that you one by one. You will be able to see a number appearing on Overture page. The "count" column will then show us how many times the specific keyword has been searched for the previous month within the Overture.com search engine.

So, the bigger this number, the higher the demand of that keywords.

Now, write down all the number next to your keywords. At the same time, the tools also show you some other phrases with high search counts, write them down onto you list as well.

There is another free software that you can use. Download it for free at:

Remember, Overture is not the only search engine on the internet. They have about only 20% of market share and multiply the number by 5 will give you a feel of real market potential.

Next step, very simple, highlight those keywords with search count of at least 5000 or more. Discard those with search count less than 5000 because they are worthless anyway.

You are done. You have a list of possible keywords to be used for your website.
